Your options…in a nutshell.

Medicare, the social health insurance program offered by the U.S. Government, was designed to keep medical care affordable for eligible Americans. It’s a basic plan and was never intended to provide full coverage. Therefore, it has gaps or “holes” that can lead to higher out-of-pocket health care costs for you.

Medicare Supplements, or “Medigap” policies, are designed to fill those gaps. Most of these policies are age-rated and your premium will increase every year. The older you get, the more you’ll pay in premiums compared to younger people. And, if you get a Medigap policy after being on Medicare for more than six months, it will most likely require underwriting – a process that might result in higher premiums or prevent you from getting the policy if you have any pre-existing conditions.

Medicare Advantage plans have premiums that are not age-rated and do not increase as you age. You’ll pay the same at age 65 as someone who is 90.  Advantage plans don’t require any underwriting which means your premium will be the same no matter when you join, regardless of pre-existing conditions.

In addition, Medicare Advantage plans offer many benefits that go above and beyond what you get with Original Medicare or Medicare Supplements. With CareSource, for example, you’ll get valuable discounts at contracted health clubs, benefits for routine chiropractic, acupuncture and vision, worldwide coverage, and certain over-the-counter drugs are free!
